2 pounds lean ground beef
1 medium sweet onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1/4 cup all purpose flour
1/4 cup tomato sauce
4 cups beef broth
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1/4 cup red wine
4 medium potatoes, peeled, boiled, and mashed
salt and pepper
shredded cheese (optional)

1. Place meat in a large skillet, season with salt and pepper and brown.
2. Remove meat and saute onion and garlic until soft.
3. Return the meat to the skillet, sprinkle with flour and stir. Add the tomato sauce and cook for a few minutes, stirring constantly.
4. Add the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and wine. Bring the mixture to a boil and simmer for 30 to 40 minutes.
5. Drain off most of the liquid and continue to simmer the meat mixture until the remaining liquid has almost evaporated. Remove from heat and let cool.
6. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
7. Boil and mash potatoes.
8. Place the meat mixture in a large cooking pan. Top with mashed potatoes. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the potatoes are golden brown. (If desired, sprinkle cheese on top of the potatoes 5 to 10 minutes before timer goes off so the cheese can melt.)
